1-2 Assignment: Research Question
Overview
This assignment is the beginning of the first phase of research for your project that is due in Module Seven. This phase includes identifying potential topics, drafting research questions, and discussing the purpose of your research. The creation of a research question is crucial, as it drives your research focus. The research question will clarify your topic and ask a question that you will later answer in your persuasive essay. This module’s research questions are a draft that you will have the opportunity to revise in future modules. You will select one of these research questions as you move forward with the project.
Directions
Before completing this assignment:
• First, review the Project Resources and select an article to read in depth.
• As you read, identify specific issues within that article that you might want to investigate further. The information under each prompt will guide you through this process.
For this assignment, you will state the purpose of your research and write potential research questions
Specifically, you must address the following rubric criteria:
- Summary: Summarize the main argument of the article that you selected in 1 to 2 sentences. Include the title and author of the article in your summary.
A. Identify the major category, such as gig economy, artificial intelligence, or book bans, that the article discusses. - Purpose: State the purpose of your research. In your response, consider the following point:
A. Explain your interest in the article and specify the topic in the article that you would like to explore further. The topic must be directly related to the article’s primary focus rather than its general subject area, Be sure the topic is narrow enough to sustain a research paper and have two clear, opposing sides. - Two Opposing Sides: Briefly describe the core idea and main perspectives for two opposing sides of the topic in the article that you would like to explore further.
- Reflection: Reflect on any knowledge that you already have about this topic and explain your interest. Discuss what you would need to research to understand more about the topic.
- Research Questions: Write two or three research questions about your topic. Think about the purpose of your research and identify questions that you would like to answer. Consider also problems that you would like to solve.
