1-2 Reading Response: Interviewing the Text
Overview
For this assignment, you will choose the text that will be used as the basis for the project in this course. Then, you will begin working with that text. Doing this will guide you in identifying key aspects of it. Specifically, this assignment will prepare you to identify the topic of the text, describe the writer’s purpose, determine the historical and cultural context, identify their core idea, and identify details of the text that are relevant to the core idea. You will build on these skills in the next module and continue to develop them in future assignments as you prepare to complete your project.
Directions
First, revisit the Resources area of this module. View the Article Selection section and choose one of the provided articles to use as the text for this assignment and project. Next, explain why you chose the text. Then, address the prompts related to content, genre, purpose, context, core idea, and details of the text using the template linked in the What to Submit section. To review the different elements and their roles, refer to the Module Guide, along with the textbook, as listed in the Resources section of Module One.
Specifically, you must address the following rubric criteria:
- Why: Explain why you chose this text and how it connects to your own experiences, background, values, or interests.
- Main Topic: Identify the main topic of the text based on how you read it.
- Genre: Identify the genre of the text as you see it.
- Purpose: Describe the writer’s purpose and why you think the writer wrote this text.
- Historical Context: Determine the historical context of the text, considering any historical cues about the setting of the text.
- Cultural Context: Determine the cultural context of the text, including who or what the text is about.
- Core Idea: Identify what you think is the core idea of the text.
- Details: Identify details of the text that are relevant to the core idea, including 2–4 places in the text that support the core idea.
