1-1 Discussion: Let’s Talk About Reading

Welcome to ENG 130! In this first discussion, you will introduce yourself to your peers and get to know one another. You will also explore your own reading experience and how it may be similar to or different from that of your peers. This discussion should serve as a brainstorming platform in which you learn about your peers, share thoughts and ideas, and build a class community.

Remember to remain thoughtful and respectful toward your peers and instructor in your initial and response discussion posts.

For your initial post, address the following

  1. Introduce yourself to the class by sharing a bit about yourself if you feel comfortable doing so. This might include information such as your preferred name and pronouns, your hobbies, where you are from, your major, or whatever you are comfortable sharing.
  2. Share some of your personal reading experiences with your classmates. Consider the following in your answer:
    • What was a single reading experience that made a lasting impression on you (positively or negatively)?
    • Do you read for pleasure? Consider that your reading experience includes reading text messages, emails, code, memes, TV subtitles, Reddit threads, Discord threads, online articles, etc. Which type of reading do you engage in most frequently, and what do you enjoy about it?
  3. Share some of your academic reading experiences with your classmates. Consider the following in your answer:
    • What is your process when you need to read something for an academic purpose (a class reading or research article)?
    • How did you learn to read that way?
    • What would you like to learn about reading to make your academic reading even more focused?

For your response posts, address the following

  1. Consider responding to posts that focus on reading experiences that may be different from your own. How do they differ? How are they the same?
  2. Share any additional advice, tips, or tricks for approaching academic readings.
