MHA-140 Intro to Mental Health: Module 1

In this opening module, you will explore the foundational concepts of mental health and wellness. You’ll learn how mental health differs from mental illness and how wellness plays a key role in overall functioning. We’ll also examine how public perceptions and stigma impact the mental health of individuals and communities.

A. Discussion: Understanding Mental Health

After completing the readings and lecture material, respond to the following:

    • How would you define mental health in your own words?
    • Share one misconception you’ve encountered (personally or in society) about mental illness and discuss how stigma may affect someone’s decision to seek help.

    B. Personal wellness reflection

Create a visual or written reflection identifying your strengths and challenges in each of SAMHSA’s Eight Dimensions of Wellness.

    • Complete the personal assessment in the Learning Materials folder. (You will not turn it in) Then:
    • Briefly describe how each dimension affects your mental health or daily functioning.
    • Optional: Share one goal you have to improve wellness in one area.

Length: 1–2 pages or infographic format

Purpose: To personalize the concept of wellness and promote self-awareness.
