1-1 Discussion: Subject Areas of the Humanities

Welcome to HUM 102! In this first discussion, you’ll introduce yourself to your peers and learn more about them too. You’ll have an opportunity to discuss your favorite form of creative expression and what subject area of the humanities it falls in.

Throughout the discussion, you’ll learn more about your peers and the differences and/or similarities of your interests and subject areas in the realm of creative expression. The discussion allows you to have a reflective moment to think about what you enjoy and how the humanities are present in your everyday life.

Discussing different subject areas of the humanities often means investigating opinions and ideas different from your own. Remember to remain thoughtful and respectful toward your peers and instructor in your initial post as well as in your discussion responses.

Create one initial post and respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts.

For your initial post, address the following

  1. First, introduce yourself. Share a little about who you are—for example, your hobbies, where you are from, your preferred name and pronouns, favorite movies, etc. There is no requirement as to how much or how little you share.
  2. Describe how the humanities show up in your life.
  3. Discuss your favorite form of creative expression and provide examples. Examples may include playing an instrument, singing, sewing, quilting, writing, carving, acting, dancing, knitting, gardening, decorating, and more. Note: The form of creative expression does not need to be something you do personally. It can be something you enjoy viewing, watching, or listening to.
  4. Share how the humanities and creative expression make your life more meaningful. Consider addressing the following:
    1. What creative works remind you of a happy time in your life, have made you laugh, or brought you closer to a family member or friend?
    2. How have creative works opened your eyes to a new way of thinking or to a new culture you had never experienced before?

For your response posts, address the following

  1. Think about the forms of creative expression that your peers mentioned and compare them with your own.
    1. How are your peers’ forms of creative expression similar to or different from yours, and how are those similarities and differences significant in terms of how they bring meaning and enjoyment to life?
