6-1 Discussion: Sociocultural Factors and Appropriation
In this discussion, you will focus on a creative work that has generated debate about cultural appreciation versus cultural appropriation. You will describe what sociocultural factors are represented in the work. You will then discuss how sociocultural factors impact self-concept and identity in relation to perceptions of cultural appreciation and appropriation.
Refer to the Module Six Guide and this module’s resources for explanations and examples of these concepts.
Discussing examples of cultural appropriation in the humanities often means investigating opinions and ideas different from your own. Remember to remain thoughtful and respectful toward your peers and instructor in your initial post as well as in your response discussion posts.
Create one initial post and respond to at least two of your classmates.
For your initial post, address the following:
Select a creative work that has sparked public or scholarly debate about whether it represents cultural appropriation, cultural appreciation, or something else entirely. You may take any position. Make certain that your position is supported by evidence and analysis. The goal is to explore how creative works intersect with culture, not to reach a single “correct” conclusion.
Refer to this module’s resources for examples.
- Describe a specific creative work that has generated debate about cultural appreciation versus cultural appropriation.
- Identify what sociocultural factors are represented in the work.
- Explain whether you view the work as an example of cultural appreciation or cultural appropriation.
- How might those sociocultural factors impact the artist’s identity?
For your response posts, address the following:
- Respond to a peer who chose a different creative work. Explain whether you agree or disagree with your peer’s description of the work as appropriation or appreciation.
- How do the sociocultural factors that influence your self-concept impact whether you view the work as cultural appropriation or cultural appreciation?
